Pre-cooking for more peace in the intestine

How to avoid stress eating in the run-up to Christmas

This episode is for you if you're struggling through the end-of-year rush and your diet often comes up short.

I share my best tips for pre-cooking: simple, suitable for everyday use and gut-friendly. You'll find out how you can create healthy structures with little effort and take better care of yourself, even when things are turbulent outside.

Why the topic of stress seems so important to me

In preparation for this podcast episode, I took a look at what the situation is like in Switzerland when it comes to stress, and I came across a report by Travail Suisse (https://www.travailsuisse.ch/de/arbeit-wirtschaft/arbeitsbedingungen/2024-11-29/stress-und-dauerbelastung-erschoepfen-die).

It said that 6 out of 7 employees are occasionally so exhausted after work that they can no longer take care of private or family matters. And around a third of those surveyed feel permanently exhausted.

Now, in the run-up to Christmas, the stress is often particularly high, as not only are many projects being completed, but also many events (professional and private) are coming up or promotions such as Black Friday and Christmas sales are being organized.

The intestine is susceptible to stress and often reacts with digestive problems, I have already mentioned these connections several times in other episodes.

Advantages of pre-cooking in the run-up to Christmas

Eating healthily, even in stressful times, is much easier with pre-cooking.

Here are a few benefits that Julia mentioned in the episode.

  • Create regularity: Prepared food helps you not only to eat from "what's left", but also to eat consciously.
  • Gain time resourcesIf you cook or prepare ahead once, you save time thinking and making decisions later - ideal in these hectic times.
  • Reduction of stress eating / impulse decisionsIf alternatives are already available, you are less likely to reach for quick options or sugar traps.
  • Support bowel friendliness: With targeted meal prep, you can include nutrients, fiber, vegetables and good fats - and really do something good for your gut.
  • Self-care as a statementPre-cooking is not a mission to "be perfect", but a sign: I take care of myself. I make it easier for myself.
  • Flexibility in everyday lifeIf you have pre-cooked dishes, snacks or cookie dough in stock, you remain spontaneous and able to act, even if guests arrive unexpectedly or the day's program changes. Good preparation pays off, especially when baking with children or for family meals

Make pre-cooking suitable for everyday use

Here we go deep into practical implementation with Julia's 5 tips on how to get started more easily:

Just do it. A large portion of soup or a stew that lasts two days - that's meal prep.
Plan basic ingredients. Boiled rice, roasted vegetables, a dip like hummus - you can combine them flexibly.
Use jars & boxes. Visible food is eaten! If you can see your prepared meals in the fridge straight away, you're more likely to reach for them.
Allow yourself repetitions. You don't have to conjure up a new recipe every day. It's perfectly okay to eat the same thing two days in a row if it's good for you.
Prepare snacks. Boiled eggs, a few nuts, vegetable sticks - so you don't reach for the tin of Christmas cookies just because there's nothing else around.
