Why your skin goes crazy in winter and what your gut has to do with it

Do you know the feeling that your skin suddenly develops a life of its own in winter? Dry patches. Redness. Maybe even dandruff. And you think to yourself: What's going on again?
The good news: it's not you. And no, your skin isn't suddenly "complicated".But it does show you that something is out of balance on the inside.
In this podcast episode, we'll take a look together and I'll show you 5 specific things you can do to calm your skin from the inside out.

Why the skin goes on strike in winter

A lot comes together in winter:

  • Cold, dry air outside
  • Warm, dry heating air indoors
  • Less sun = less vitamin D
  • More stress (Christmas, end-of-year rush...)
  • Diet often becomes heavier, sweeter, fattier

All of this means: more stress for your body - and this also shows on your skin. Because skin and gut are a team. And what's wrong on the inside shows on the outside.

Connection between skin and gut

The skin is the mirror of the gut. And that's more than just a nice saying. Your gut and your skin communicate. Via the immune system, via inflammatory messengers, via the microbiome.

If the gut is irritated, the skin lacks important building blocks for regeneration. If the intestinal barrier is perforated, the skin also becomes more permeable. Key words: eczema, redness, tightness.

What your skin really needs in winter - from the inside out

Here are the 5 things you can treat yourself and your skin to in winter:

Fiber for the microbiome

Good bacteria need food - and they get it in the form of soluble fiber, e.g. from acacia fiber, inulin or resistant starch.
They promote short-chain fatty acids, which strengthen the intestinal wall and reduce inflammation.

Tip: See if you can get 30g of fiber per day. That's more than you might think.

Healthy fats - especially omega-3

Omega-3 acts like an internal skin protector. It reduces silent inflammation, makes the skin more supple and the cell membranes more stable.

Many of our customers report that their skin becomes visibly calmer and less "tense" when they regularly take omega-3.

Protein & amino acids

The skin needs building blocks for repair and regeneration. And these come from protein.
If your skin is cracked or heals badly, this could be an indication of protein deficiency.

Tip: Have your total protein level in the blood checked. A value between 7.2 and 7.8 g/dl would be ideal.

Our "Prevent360" blood analysis can also be useful for you, where you can see your amino acid status and also your fatty acid status! You can find more information about Prevent360 here: https: //arktisbiopharma.ch/products/prevent-360

A strong intestinal barrier

If the intestinal wall becomes permeable ("leaky gut"), this can have a direct impact on your skin. Key words: eczema, blemishes, neurodermatitis.
Support your barrier with L-glutamine, probiotics, stress-reducing breathing exercises and a low-inflammatory diet.

And if you want to know for sure whether you have a leaky gut, take the leaky gut test: https: //arktisbiopharma.ch/products/leaky-gut-analyse

Vitamin D: Your winter booster

In winter, almost everyone's vitamin D levels are too low. This weakens the immune system and makes the skin more susceptible.

Tip: Have your levels tested and supplement if necessary, possibly in combination with K2.

Everyday tips for beautiful winter skin

The following things will also help you

  • Drink still water. Lots of it, even warm
  • Reduce sugar and alcohol
  • Incorporate fermented vegetables (e.g.e.g. sauerkraut or herbal)
  • Get plenty of daylight, even if it is cloudy
  • Get enough sleep. Yes, really. Sounds banal, but it's so important

Conclusion: your skin shows what's going on inside

Winter skin is not destiny, but a signal. A sign that your body needs more support right now.And you can do a lot to calm your skin. Not with the tenth cream, but with small changes in everyday life.

If you feel that your skin needs help right now, start with your gut.
And remember: you don't have to change everything at once. Start with one point and see how your body reacts.
